OUR TROOPS IN EGYPT AND SAMOA.
Writing to the Hon. Mr Alien, Minister of Defence, oil December 10, General Godley, Commandant of the New Zealand .forces in Egypt, stated: "Everything is going on satisfactorily. The men ure benavmg very well." Referring to the horses General Godley says: " Up to date we have lost 77 altogether. No horses suffering lrom any infectious complaint just now. There aro 7b at present unfit for service, but the veterinary surgeon says they will bo fit in four weeks alter receiving special treatment."
The Hon. Mr Allen informed our representative yesterday that, in regard to Samoa, immediately after tho occupation, a number of civil offices were filled by soldiers, but the time has now come for the holders of these positions to decide whether they will continue in office or not. The Government proposes to give them the opportunity of going to tho front, but if they prefer to remain in tho civil service they will be relieved from army duty, become civil servants, and receive tho pay of civil servants
