THE ZEPPELIN RAID
A CONSTABLE'S EVIDENCE. SURE IT WAS AN AEROPLANE. LONDON, January 21. At the inquest on the victims of the aerial raid at Yarmouth, a constable, in his evidence, stated that he saw the aircraft at a height of about 150 ft. He was sure it was an aeroplane, and it appeared to follow the direction of the street lights. He took it for a British machine until it dropped a bomb. INCREASE OF RECRUITS. LONDON, January 21. The airship raid has resulted in large recruiting in London. American comment. THE OPINION OF NEUTRALS. (Times and Sydney Sun Services.) NEW YORK, January 21. (Received Jan. 22, at 5.40 p.m.) The World asks, " What can Germany hope to gain by her ■wanton attacks on undefended places and slaughter of innocents? Certainly not the good opinion of neutrals, who know that the rules of civilised warfare require notice of bombardment of even fortified places." OFFICIAL DEFENCE OF THE RAID. A MATTER OF. SELF-DEFENCE. LONDON, January 22. (Received Jan. 22, at 8.55 p.m.) A Berlin official message says, in justification of the air raid : " Our airships, in order to attack the fortified place of Yarmouth, were obliged to fly over other places, from which they were fired at. These attacks were answered by throwing boinbs. England has no Tight to be indignant. Her flying machines and ships attacked open towns such as Freiburg, Dorassalem, and Swokopmund, and Germany cannot be forced to forgo legitimate self-defence."
