Every now and again people who buy shares at auction which have been "old on account of being forfeited for the nonpayment of calls, strike a bit of luck (says the Auckland Star). An instance of this occurred shortly before Christmas, when some 1000 shares in the Waiotahi mine were sold because the owners had failed to pay a Id call. The prices realised l were very low, in some cases 5s per 1000 being accepted. Bofor© the exchange closed for the Christmas vacation, a demand set in for Waiotahi shares, and sales were made in the open market, up to 9d, which left a handsome profit for the speculators. This advance was all the more surprising, because owing to the stoppage of work ir> the main crosscut at 1000 ft operatiohs in the Waiotahi mine had been suspended. Probably recollection had been aroused of some years ago when the Waiotahi had almost olosed down, and a new run of gold was discovered, which resulted in shares advancing from 9s 6d to £20 each. Of course there were only 6000 shares in the company at that time, hence the smart advance. All the same, something like £35 per share "was distributed in dividends. On Thursday morning a small parcel of shares in the Waitangi Consolidated Company sold at auction for 8d each, although the owners had evidently not considered them worth the expenditure of Id per share. Every home should keep WOLFE'S SCHNAPPS—tho domestic safeguard.
