TATERI SHOW
A SUCCESSFUL DAY. Tho Taicri Agricultural Society again experienced most unfortunate weather for its annual show, which w«i hold in Mr W. Ohartere's paddock, Mosgirl, yesterday. Tho early morning promised well, but heavy rain, with a strong south-west wind cainu on in tho forenoon, and made conditions very unpleasant. The 'iaiori &huw ]i;is usually been held (luring tho month of Anvember, but it was felt tlnvt the Dunedin snow and the number of other allows hold about that tune interfered with its success. It was accordingly decided to change the dato to the middle of January, and those who advocated tho change have reason to claim that tho experiment has proved a decided success. Yesterday's show was the fifty-fourth held by the society, and tho number of entries was tho largest over received, except .at tho .Jubilee show four years ago. There was a slight decrease in the number of draught horse entries, but the light-horso section showed a marked increase. Tho sheep section, in which a decrease had been predicted owing to the changed date, proved to bo tho largest the, society hae ever had. Dairy produce entries and cattlo also showed a substantial increase in numbers. The following arc the details of entries in the various sections during tho past three years:— 1912. 1913. 1915. Draught horses ... 151 145 134 Light horses ... „. „. 125 99 134 Cattle 29 35 45 Sheep „ 37 54 85 Dogs „. „ 11 14 14 Swine — 5 — Dairy produce* ... ... 93 128 158 Cured meats 4 9 — Post entries 38 31 48 488 528 618 A large crowd gathered in the afternoon in spite of the weather, and the gate money of £i 35 was about £10 more than the society has ever previously taken at Mosgiel Among tho visitors to the grounds were the Hon. John MacGregor, M.L.C., and Messrs R. Scott and J. M. Dickson, M.P.'s. 'Ihe Mosgiel Band, conducted by Bandmaster White, played stirring patriotic music during the afternoon. The Clydesdale section is alwaye the main feature of the Taieri Show, and local breeders have good reason to regard it as the best draught horse show in tho dominion. The stamp of animal forward yesterday was quite up to the accustomed standard. The slight falling off in numbers is accounted for by the fact that several prominent breeders, notaMy Mr S. Young, of Outram, and Mr J. C'allender, of Allanton, were not this year represented in the ring. The entire championship went again to Mr J. Patrick's Baron Bold, Thomson and Co.'s Newton Chief receiving the reservo championship. Thomson and Co. won the championship for draught mares with Baron's brilliant, the reserve championship going to Mr J. Patrick's Maggie Young, 'i&e judges wero well pleased with the heavy horses as a whole, and spoke in particularly glowing terms of the pairs of mares and of tho yearling and two-year-old lillies. Nearly all the animals were in good show condition, and reflected much credit on thoso who had had the preparation of them. Mr James Patrick was awarded the special prize for securing most points in the section, Thomson and Co. being second. Among tho light horses there. wero very good rings, both of eaddlo and harness ponies, and competition was strong also in the classes for weight-carrying hacks. The judges spoke very highly of tho whole section, and considered it tho best they had seen in the district for a number of years. The prize-winners among tho dogcart horses were of a specially fine stamp. The cattle sections did not excite much interest or draw much competition. Mr James Miller had almost a clear field in the shorthorn classes. Among the fat cattle, where the entries were moro numerous, Mr W. J. Charters was tho most succesful exhibitor. Most of tho sheep entered were Border Leicester*, and the placed animals in theso classes wero of excellent quality and easily outdistanced their rivals. The judge considered Mr Robert Miller's champion ewe to be quite good enough for any company. Mr John Miller annexed all the Romney Marsh awards, and Mr F. J. Wright had similar uncontested victories in the Shropshire Down section. Tho display of fat lambs was a particularly good one. Prizes in the dairy produce section wore as usual very keenly competed for, and the result was a very pretty and tempting display of produce and cookery. The trophy for securing most points in the section was won somewhat easily by Miss E. Kempshall, with Mi6s Fowler second. Partly owing to the length of time occupied in judging the horses, and partly to the large number of competitors the trotting and jumping contests did not conclude till a late hour. A very pretty little team of black ponies, belonging to Mr Roderick Mackenzie, was busy drawing about the grounds a carriageful of collectors for the Belgian Fund. A very big share of the work of organising the show and carrying it through to a successful issue fell upon the secretary (Mr W. E. M'Lean), to whom every credit is due.
