FIRE AT NEWMARKET
<»—— SEVERAL PREMISES DAMAGED. iPee United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 8. A fire which caused damage estimated at between £2000 and £3000 occurred at Newmarket this afternoon. 'fho outbreak originated in a living room above the chemist shop of Wilfred Fookes, and three rooms w;?re gutted. The flames spread along the wooden rafters, causing damage to the ceilings of three other rooms in the samo block. A considerable number of rooms of other shops in the block were damaged by water, the stocks in some cases being also damaged. The premises affected were —Fookes. chemist; YV. Lane and Co.. tobacconist; C. F. Douglas, fish saloon; Konng Young, fruiterer; and Miss It. Beeknuinn, oonfectioncer. All were damaged by water. The owner of the block is Mr R. H. Abbott. The shops ;:re insured in the Liverpool and London and Globe office. Mr Fookes's stock in the Sun office, Mr Lane's stock in the Standard office, and Miss Beckmann's stock in the Ocean office Koung Young is also insured, but Mr Douglas ; s rot insured. The amounts of the insurances are not known.
