TRANSFERENCE OF ACTIVITIES.
The floods of winter have damped the earth and the deadly determination of the Allies has damped the fire of German en--1 ; ergy in the west of Flanders, and so the I Germans are trying drier ground near the J Aisne, and in the Argonne and Woevre i districts, and have met with no better re- | eults. The Germans have been feeling the j pressure all along the line from the Aisne i to Verdun, and evidently they have scented ! danger from the direction of. Verdun, end ! sent large reinforcements thither. Some of ! the forces that were retiring , last week from •; the lines north of Lille undoubtedly have '. been sent to reinforce the lines north and 1 ! east of Verdun. If the truth were known, ! it would be found that many men have i been sent east against the Russians, and 1 J now it only remains for the French to find I the weak spot which in these days of j aeroplanes is" much easier than in the days of Marlborough and Napoleon, and suddenly to throw as many men against the I Germans as they can. in order to drive I the Germans out of France. NAVAL ACTIVITIES. The report, if true, of the revelation of the position of the British and Japanese men-of-war off the coast of Southern California shows that in Western America the Germane have some good friends, though what the vessels are doing there passes comprehension. It is probable that the German Pacific fleet is round Cape Horn by this time, and_ either proceeding up the Atlantic or watching for English shipping that may be going round the Cape of Good Hope, and in the interim trying to give specific aid to the Germans in South-west Africa. They may also be trying to effect a junction with the Karlsruhe, after which they may proceed to the Indian Opean. German interests in tho Pacific having reached the zero point, there is not much in that ocean to demand their attention.
