CITY POLICE COURT.

Thuesdat, October 8. (Before Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.M.) Drunkenness and Theft.—Hugh Wikon pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness, this being his third offence within the past six months. —A fine of 40s was imposed, in default 14 days' imprisonment. He was aiso charged that on or about October 7, he did steal a cheque valued at £15, the property of Andrew Doig.—Senior Sergeant Dart stated that a gentleman from the country was staying at the same place in town as the accused, and was relieved of a cheque for the amount mentioned. The matter was reported to the police, and the cheque was found, bat they had not been able to find the complainant, who evidently had gone back to the country. A rcma:nd was needed in order that the necessary evidence for the prosecution might be procured.—The accused was remanded until next Friday.

Trespassing. — William James pleaded guilty to trespassing in the railway goods yard, on October 7. He stated that he had 2s 2d in hie possession, and he was looking for work. Ho was anxious to obtain employment, and could do any form of work. The Magistrate said that the fine ho would inflict in this case should not be taken as a .precedent in any way, and if ho had found that the circumstances warranted it he would have inflicted a prntty severe fine. In the circumstances a fine of 10s would be imposed, in default three days' imprisonment
