The Hornelen, discharging Newcastle coal, was the only "vessel in port yesterday, ' and the, wharves consequently presented a somewhat deserted appearance. This state of affairs should be remedied today, for four arrivals are expected—the Warrimoo, Flora, Pukaki, and Storm. The Verdala is expected to come out of dock at Port Chalmers this morning. The Pukaki is duo here to-day from Tim&ru, and tpjll sail in i the evening for the West Coast The Corinna is due here from Wellington to-morrow morning, and will leave the same day for Nelson, New Plymouth, and 1 Onehunga, -via ports. Captain D. M'Lean, who had been on holiday leave, rejoined the Maheno at Auckland on Monday, Captain Stevens coming ashore to await instructions. The Flora is due at Port Chalmers this morning from the West Coast, and will leave Dunedin cn Friday for Westport, where she will load again for Oamaru and •Dunedin. _ „ The Warrimoo is due from Auckland, via East Coast ports, about 8 o'clock this morning, and will bring passengers from the Ruahine at Wellington. She will leave on Friday on the return trip. The W&itemata, -which is due here on Friday from northern ports, is bringing transhipments ex the Anglo-Egyptian and the Rangatira. The former vessel, which was detained atJ Sydney, having been requisitioned by tho Commonwealth Government as a troopship, was bringing cargo to Australia and New Zealand from Montreal and Eastern America.

In continuation of the discharge of her cargo from West of England ports, the s Federal and Shire liner Surrey arrived at Lyttelton yesteday morning from Wellington. The Surrey will next come 011 to

Dunedin to complete discharge. , London adviceS' report that quantities of British cargo aboard the British and German vessels -which were in German ports at the outbreak of the war have been sold, by order of the German Government'. A movement for reprisals is therefore afoot in England, where hitherto a distinction has been made between such cargo and that captured. It is now proposed to establish a commercial clearing house 10 " receive money arising from German cargo sold to make payments to merchants whoso cargo has been sold in Germany. THE RUAHINE'S ARRiVAL. Considerably bohind time, the New Zealand Shipping Company's R.M.S. Ruahine ; arrived at Wellington from London at 1.20 p.m. on Saturday, after an eventful passage. The Ruahine left the Albert Docks on Augnst 9, and embarked passengers and mails at' Tilbury, resuming her voyage at 5 a.m. on August 11. The Ruahine was stopped in the Downs by H.M.S. Chub, and the ship's papers were examined, and was also stopped by a French battleship oft Ushant. Light south-westerly and southerly winds and fine weather lasted till off ' Cape Finistcrre, followed bv northerly and north-easterly winds till arrival at Teneriffe, early on August 17. St. Vincent was signalled on August 24. Light trades and fine weather were experienced till rounding the Cape of Good Hope. A succession of westerly and south-westerly gales end high seas raged till arrival at Hobart on Saturday week. Moderate favourable winds and seas marked tho passage across the Tasman gea. After passing Cape Farewell light winds, smooth seas, and fine weather prevailed till arrival, Tho Ruahine had 4500 tpns of cargo to discharge at Wellington. An effort was to have been made to despatch tho Ruahine from Wellington yesterday for Lyttelton, to complete discharge. The liner will subsequently load at Lyttelton, Napier, Auckland, and Weilington. Tho Ruahine's cargo for Dunedin will bo transhipped at Wellington and brought down by tho coastal steamers.
