MINING.

The secretary of the Electric Company reports the following returns:—No. 1 dredge, 12oz 19dwt, for 122 hours' work; No. 2 dredge, lUoz Bdwt, for 98 hours' work. . A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that the Ross Goldtields mine superintendent renorts a return for the past week oi 490z 6dwt ot gold from 1000 trucks of washdirt. The Rise and Shine No. 1 dredge recommenced work on Tuesday week, and had a steady rUn until Saturday night. There was no untavourable change in the ground. The Rise and Shine No. 2 dredge worked a cut of 140 ft, making 20ft ahead. A bottom of coal and clay was got at an average depth of 46ft. Tho clay portion carried fairly good wash. During the past week the Electric No. 1 dredge wor'tad 122 hours for a distance ahead of 9ft. ' I'here was no change in the cut, but the river had been very unsteady, while the drift was troublesome all the week. Tho elevator caused some loss of time. The ground had not been so rough as previously.. The sample ot gold wis of a finer nature. Very fair looking wash was coming in on the Bannockburn side, showmg moderate prospects of fine gold. The bottom consisted of granite .and sandstone. 'llie master of the Electric No. 2 dredge reports that a cut has been opened in solid ground. There is a fair depth of very tight and nice looking wash with "Maoris." An improvement is expected any day. The bottom is soft, and the ground is more than 38ft deep. The Good Chance dredge has now been definitely closed down, and will probably not recommence operations until Ine early part of next year. Victoria's gold yield for August was 40,0770z gross, or 37,0810z fine, valued at £157,510. Compared with the yield for August of last year, a decrease of 41260z fine occurred. The return for the last eight months was 306,0300z gross, or 285,0690z fine, valued at £1.210.895. The figures show a decrease of 39140z finp, compared with the quantity won during the corresponding period of last year.
