A steamer named the, Wirrall (says an exchange) lias been chartered by the New Zealand Shipping Company to load at Montreal for Australian and New Zealand ports. She has been fixed to sail on October 25. During the latter part of her voyage of inspection of the Pacific cable stations the repair steamer Iris, which returned to Auckland on Tuesday, was compelled to travel with the utmost caution. All the precautions adopted by unarmed vessels voyaging in waters ranged by the enemy's warships wero used on the Iris after the outbreak of war, but no material modification was made in her programme of visits to the lonely cable stations of the Pacific Ocean. From Vancouver she proceeded on her return voyage to Honolulu, and left that port the day beioro the arrival of the German cruiser Nurnberg. Fanning Island was reached on September 1, exactly a week before the interruption of the cable, and the Iris was at Suva when this occurred. Leaving Suva again on September 8, the Iris proceeded to Norfolk Island, where minor repairs wero effected to the cable. Leaving the latter stdtion on Saturday, the vessel had a rough trip to Auckland. No foreign vessels were 6i'gnted during any part of the voyage, and the Iris was not provided with an escort at any time.
