FLOWER SALE AND BENEFIT CONCERT. A flower sale snd entertainment were held in -the Russell Street Hall yesterday afternoon and evening, under the auspices of the First Church Russell Street Haeremai Club, with the abject of raising funds in aid of the Glcidimng Home, and other Presbyterian orphanages. Members of the club and their friends had gone to work energetically, and the result of their efforts . was to be seen in the splendid array of beautiful spring flowers and foliage which met the eye ot the visitor on entering the hall. The sale was opened by Mr James Dick, and brisk business was done throughout the afternoon. A cake stall, a sweet stall, and a refreshment room also received a large measi.re of patronage, and helped to swell the amount raised by the sale of the flowers. The stallholders woro as. follow:—Flowers —Mrs Ewer. Cameron and Miss Nelson; eakce—Miss Smart and Miss G. Dewar; sweets—Misses E. M'Peak, ]}. Blackwood, and V. Bastings; afternoon tea—Miss Morrison, Sirs L. Salmond, and Mrs J Scott. In the evening an enjoyable entertainment, provided by friends, was very well patronised, the hall bcin?; filled to overflowing. The Rev. J. L. Robinson presided, and at- the outset remarked that it was very gratifying to see that the members of the church, in the midst of many demands made on them for patriotic and other purposes, had time to think of the children and had not neglected their claims. Many well known local artists contributed items, and all wero received with warm applause, few being allowed to depart before ' extra numbers had been given. The pro- ] gramme wis as follows Misses Buchanan ) (2), Morrison, M'Cortie, and Provo (in- i strumenlal selections), children from Glen- . dining Home (action songs), Miss Forrester ( (recitation), Mrs 11. Morton (vocal solo), . Misses B.irtli _ (dialogue), Miss Churchill (recitation), Miss J. Maxwell (comic song), 1 Mr G. W. Johnstone (vpcal solo), Mr 11. Axelsen thanked the audience for the kind and practical interest shown in the children. He said that there wen 1 between 60 and 70 boys and girls at the Glendining Home, about 40 boys at Grants' Braes. 20 boys at Clyde ' street, and about 150 boys in the country, < so that, the church had under its care nearly j 300 boys and girls, who were all being ! well trained and cared for. This was' a splendid achievement. Such a large num- ■] bor of young peop!e_ required a steady sup- j ply of funds f'ir their .support, but he was glad to bo able to say that they had*never , run short of money, and ho believed they t never would.—(Applause.) . i The entertainment concluded with the .combined singivg of the National Anthem.
