The advertisement in the Aehburton Guardian of Friday, to the effect thai an anti-militarist meeting would be held in the Arcade on Saturday evening, was received with incredulity in Ashburton, aad it was frequently asserted that the advertisement was nothing but a hoax (remarks the paper in question). Threats of what would happen to the speakers if they dared to address a meeting at this particular crisis were heard on all sides. The Sergeant of Police, knowing that tihe temper of the populace would not brook the airing of anti-patriotic speeches, telegraphed to the Superintendent at Ohristdhuroh, suggesting that tfoo speakers, whoever they might be, should be warned not to come. Whether this had tho desired effect of frightening off the members -of the National Peace Council, if they were responsible for the insertion of the advertisement, is not known, but it is a fact that those who were looking forward to the visit of the anti-mili-tarists were disappointed. There was quite a large audience about on Saturday evening, and a good many hung about the precincts of the Arcade for fully an hour, bat their patience was not rewarded. An important question as to the interpretation of the Wellington Dairymen's Employees' award was argued at the "Wellington Magistrate's Court on Tuesday (saye the Post). The Inspector of Awards (Mr R. T. Bailey) claimed to recover a penalty of £10 from A. Russell for failing to pay certain employees, two boys, the award rates. The point involved, therefore, was , as. to boy labour. Substantially, the fact* wero admitted. The inspector stated |hat it was the habit of dairymen to employ schoolboys for two or three hours morning to assist in the delivery of milk. Clause 3 of the award provided that the minimum wage should be £2 10s per week. Did the boys come under the heading of employees? Or did |dairyman have a right to employ boys, ae they had been in the habit of doing,: ■ at less than the award rates? Mr M. Myers, who defended the action, claimed that aa there was no provision in the award, governing boy labour his client had acted in a perfectly legal manner. Both sides quoted numerous authorities in similar cases heard in New Zealand, ! and hie Worship intimated that ha would reserve decision. Waters' Pharmacy.—New address, No. S Princes street....

Pointing- to a slanting rock surface, he was lecturing to the young men upon the scratching and the polishing action of tho ice and its moraine so long ago, when all at once loud jguft'awe burst from a stone-broaker well known to I3io professor who, unnoticed, had been plying his humble occupation near by the slanting and shining rock. " Well, Thomas," said the Professor, " what is tho cause of yotrr hilarity to-day?" "Aweel, Professor, ye're telling them students that the ice poliched thae rocks. Ice! Eff ye hed as mony laddies' breoke to pey fur es alh her ye wad ken better."
