THE BRITISH STAND.
FRENCH COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF'S PRAISE. LONDON, Aug. 28 (morning). (Received Aug. 28, at 7.40 p.m.) General J off re, Commander inChief of the French army, has forwarded the following message to Field-marshal Sir John French, Commander of the British Expeditionary Force:— " The British army did not hesitate to throw its whole strength against forces having a great numerical superiority. In so doing it contributed in the most effective manner to securing the left flank of the French army. It exhibited devotion, energy, and per* severence which will be shown ag<»ia to-morrow and make certain the triumph of our common cause. The # French will' never forget the services rendered to them. The French army will be inspired by the same spirit of '. self-sacrifice and determination to conquer and make good its debt of gratitude to Britain in the battles of the near future." OCCUPATION OF OSTEND. LONDON, August 28. (Received Aug. 28, at 8 p.m.) In the House of Commons, Mr Churcl'ill stated that British marines had occupied Ostend to prevent the Germans from getting a foothold on the channel.
