RUGBY. SATURDAY'S MATCHES. WELLINGTON v. SOUTHLAND. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, August 22. In their first representative match, of the ■esson Wellington had a runaway victory to-day over Southland by 54 points to nil. The visitors opened with some lively work, but wero soon tired out In the second spell they could hardly stand up before the Wellington i»ok. The Rugby football match between the Paranaki and Auckland representative teams was played here yesterday in fine weather and before an attendance of fully 8000 persons. The game was one of the best seen here for many years, play in the first quarter being particularly fast and exciting. The heavy Taranaki forwards •were also fast, and, bunting in packs, gave the Auckland backs considerable trouble. The Taranaki backs did not combine well, but. almost to a man showed individual brilliancy. The local forwards showed considerable dash, and in the loose were equal to the visitors' pack, but their soruim play was not good. The Auckland backs were distinctly superior to the Taranaki rearguard in combination, andl this more than oomponsated for the difference in individual merit of the players. Auckland won by 15 points to 8, the Taranaki points being scored in the last ten minutes of the game, and after Bruce and Weston, "All Blacks," had been compelled to retire through injuries. The teams were as follows:— Taranaki.—Full back, George; threequarters—Stohr, Cameron, and Roberts; fiv-eighth, Coeman;? half back, Brown; wing forwards—Taylor and Whittington; forwards—Cain, Kissick, Bernstein, Young, Robertson., Patterson, and PauL Auckland.—Full book, Moffit; threequarters—M'Gregor, J. D. Stewart, and Macky; five-eighths—Weston and Geddes; half hack, Ross; wrap forward, D. Stewart; forwards—Sellars, Casey, French, Bruce, Barrett, Bilkey, audi Avery. There was no score in the first quarter, but the interest never waned. Bruce was hurt, and had to retire. The second quarter opened with. Aucldaad attacking, and Macky, by foiling to pack up a rolling ball after a imull by Stohr, lost a certain try. Shortly afterwards J. D. Stewart scored from a passing run. Weston converted. There was no further score at half-time, but soon after the spell began Ross worked the blind side of the scram and scored a try, which was not converted. Just as the third quarter was ending Macky was given a chance by Ross, and side-stepping Roberta he beat the full back and scored under the posts. J. Stewart converted. Weston retired -with an injured knee in this quarter, Taranaki had the best of the last quarter. With about 10 minutes to go Stohr made a good opening for Roberts, who ran in and scored a *ry, which he allso converted. Shortly afterwards Roberts kicked a goal from a free kick, and the game ended: Auckland ~ -13 points. Taranaki 8 points. CANTERBURY, v. WANGANUI. (Per United Press Association.) WANGANUI, August 23. The largest attendance recorded this reason witnessed the match Canterbury v. Wanganui, which resulted in a win for tha visitors by 8 points to nil. Delightful ■weather prevailed. The match this afternoon virtually resolves itself, therefore, into one for the prelniership of the secondary schools of tho dominion in Rugby football. It is hoped that the old boys of the Otago Boys' High School who are at present in camp at Tahuna Park will have an opportunity of attending the match. It is understood that tho military authorities will be prepared to grant them leave for the afternoon if this can be arranged without interference with the work in the camp. LEAGUE FOOTBALL. ' AUCKLAND v. WELLINGTON. (Pkb Unitbd Press Association.) AUCKLAND. August 23. Tho Auckland v. Wellington League football representative match was played in the presence of about 5000 persona yesterday. The gamo was spectacular, and was distinguished by many exciting incidents. Auckland lost three men through manor injuries. The homo team was superior both in forwards and backs. The first spell was noticeable for fast and exciting play, and for the rapidity with which both sides in turn attacked. The first score of; the match came after a passing run. Wynyard, who beat two men, score*}. Savory converted. The latter player also kicked a penalty goal before half-time. In the second spell Weston scored for Auckland, and goals were kicked for Wellington by Bradley (2), and Campbell. The game ended with the scores—Auckland, 10 points; Wellington, 6 points.
