OTAGO CIIESS CLUB

OPENING OF THE SEASON. There was a good muster of members at tho Otago Chess Club's room, last night to take part in tho ceremonial opening of the season. The President (Mr P. MacLaurin), as an opening move, referred to the fact that a four-movo problem recently published locally had been unsolvable by the members, and the mutter hud been forwarded Home, to know whether thero was a solution. The president then proceeded to say that he was about to propose to tho Mayor a one-move problem, and that was to open the twenty-sixth session of their club. Ho was sure tho Mayor would bo able to solve it ius easily as he would solvo more knotty problems that would come beforo him "when presiding over tho moves in tho City Council.—(Laughter.) The Mayor (Mr J. B. Shacklock) was very cordially received on rising to declare the season open. He admitted that he was not a chess player, and therefore could not help them to solve the tecnnicnl difficulties of the problem to which their president had referred. It was because he was tho Mayor that ho was glad to grace with his presence all pastimes that were for the benefit of the community. The game of chess, he believed, sharpened tho intellect, and made .players as careful of thoir moves on tho board as they should bo in all their moves in life. In their pastimes, and in " life, they ought to be ready to deal with any move affecting them that took place. Cliess was a pastime that would, be b?!ieved, "help to make players good citizens, and therefore ho had greit pleasure in following in tho footsteps of his predecessors in office, and declared the season open. —(Applause.) Tho Mayor then made tho customary move with the Icing's pawn, and a match was soon in progress between sides chosen by the president and vice-president. [ At the conclusion of tho games a presentation was made to Mr A. V. Fraer, tho h9n_ secretory, who resigned office on account of his removal to Wellington.
