LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.

THE REV. D. MACLENNAN. Sib,—-I have noted with pleasure more than one letter in your valuable columns expressing the hope that something will be done by the Highlanders of Otago as a Godspeed to the Rev. Duncan Maclennan. M.A., as he returns, .with Mrs Maclennan and their family, to the Mother Country. Highlanders need no stimulus to kindly courtesy; but, "as one who had the privilege of being a fellow-student o£ Mr Maclennan's for four years in Edinburgh, I am glad of an opportunity of expressing my admiration of him, and affection for him as a fine scholar, a true Highland gentleman and friend, /and an able and devoted Christian minister. As minister of Waipu, the purest Highland parish in the hemisphere, and afterwards of Chalmers Church, 1 Dunedin, and of Edendale, he lias rendered unique services to the Highlanders of our dominion. He is, I have reason to believe, one'of the best Celtic scholars in Australasia; and, personally, I can testify ito his extraordinary acquaintance ( with Highland folk-lore. It is altogether fitting that such a man should be sped on his way back to the land of the heather with such feeling expressions of regret and good wishes as over well forth from the hearts of true Highlanders.—l am, etc., ! W. Geay Dixon. Eoslyn Manse, May 9. ' Sib, —I thank your anonymous correspon'dente for their kindly intention, but they may not bo aware that Highlanders about Dunedin treated me with great kindness while there, ar.d when I left for Edendale. There is no call whatsoever for what is now suggested, and I much dislike the publicity that is given to such a proposal.—l am, etc. £>• Maclennan. Edendale, May 9. [In view of the statement of Mr Maclennan's wishes in the above letter, further correspondence on this subject is decrmed.— Ed. O.D.T.]
