With the recent carrying of the poll authorising the Harbour Board to raise a loan of £150,000 for the further improvement of the port, the way is now clear for the board to put its proposals into effect, and at a meeting last night .several important decisions were come to in regard to the carrying aut of ''the scheme of works. When Mr C. Howarth> the board's engineer, was at Home a "few months ago, he arranged with the leading dredgebuilders to forward tenders for a new dredge, the understanding being that these should arrive in Wanganui before the time of the poll, so that the successful tenderer could be notified by cable as soon as ■possible after, the loan was carried, and much, valuable time thereby savdd. The tenders duly arrived and were examined, with the result that last evening it was resolved that the board accept the tender at £35,030 of Messrs Fleming and Ferguson, of Paisley, for the building and delivery of the new dredge. The new dTedge will be of the very latest type, and though slightly smaller than the'Lyttelton Harbour Board's dredge Canterbury,, she will have improvements and attachments that no other drejdge at present in New Zealand has. As two more cranes will be required for the handling, of stone and other material, tenders were also invited for these, and that of Messrs Strothbert and Pitt, of Glasgow, at £1385 each, was accepted. This is the firm thatTTrailt the cranes at present in use by the board. _
