Saturday, Aran 18. (Before Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.M.)

Drunkenness.—Alexander Muir was fined 20s, in default three days' imprisonment. Francis Roberts, for a fifth offence within the past six months, was sentenced 'to one month's imprisonment, with hard labour. Theft. —George Prior Harris pleaded guilty to a charge of having, on April 17, stolen a book entitled " Tenterhooks," valued at 3s 6d, the, property of Joseph Braithwaite.— Ohief Detective Herbert informed the court that the' accused was interrogated by Detective Hammerley, to whom the theft had been reported, and he admitted . having, stolen the book,' and said, in addition, that he knew how to get plenty more of the same kind. He was then 'arrested.—The evidence of Detective Hammerler and the complainant having been heard, the accused said, he did not know what Jhad possessed him to steal, this book. He. must nave been out of his senses through drink.—The Magistrate said that from what the accused,had told the detective this was not : his first offence of this kind. He appeared to have gone from bad to worse, and from drinking he had given way to a temptation to steal.—The accused said this was the only time he had ever committed . a theft,—The Magistrate said that as this was the.accused's first offence of this kind, he would inflict a fine. The accused" would be convicted and fined 20s, and ordered to refund.jtp,.:the : . complainant, in; default seven days;, imprisonment.
