AN AMERICAN HORROR

ANOTHER FATAL FIRE

Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright.

NEW YORK, April 17.

Fourteen persons are known to have been killed and four injured (one mortally) as a result of a fire in a five-storey tene-

ment.

The firemen, after searching the wreckage, announced that 14 bodies had been recovered. Among them was a woman with a babe in her arms.

Several known occupants of the house are missing.

The bodies were so badly charred as to Tender identification almost impossible.

The fire started in the basement. A "5 to 10 cent store" occupied the first floor.

The flames spread rapidly up the stairway, many of the occupants being saved by the fire escapes*

During the fire a man attempted to escape over the Toof. He fell and was killed. Another was descending, when the ladder broke. Captain Smith, of the fire brigade, caught him and held him safely until another ladder was procured. Both were saved. The death roll is 11.
