"AYSON'S CLAY GAP."
♦ — : TO BE METALLED AT LAST. ACTION BY CLUTHA COUNTY COUNCIL. At the meeting of tho Clutha County Council on Friday the unnietalled gap ou the Main South road at Kaihuku Hill, .commonly known as "Ayeon's Clay Gap," came up for discussion, toe Chairman (Or Mitonell) asking if there wae to be a report on the road. Hβ said he would be pleated if someone would move that the metalled. Cr Begg said he had interviewed the -members of tne Dunedin and Invercargill Motor Association:), and had learned that £40 or £50 would be giv«n by the associations as a subsidy to the council for metalling the road. It was recognised as a most necessary • work. He was chary about moving in a matter out of his own riding, so, if Cr Edwards would suggest .that the roadl should be metalled he would leave it with him. Cr Edwards said his riding could not afford to metal tho road.' Metal was wanted I on Finegand road, and there were also requests for mefcallinp: at Key's and Tβ Hooka. Cr Nicol: There seems to bo a large balance in the Clutha Riding for this time of tho year. There is over £1000, and it is the only riding which has a t balance. It is a very good thing to have a credit balance, but, at the same time, I don't think it is right to carry a large balance forward from one year to the other. The expenditure should be according to the rates levied. I think some should be spent on the road, as it is necessary, and the engineer should be instructed to make an estimate of the cost of metalling it. The Engineer: There is a quarry close by, and the metal could be put on the road at £3 per cha:ji. There axe 57 chains to be metalled, and, I think, between £200 and £300 would cover all that is to be done. Cr Begg: In the face of that J will propose a motion in order to promote discussion, but I hope it won't 'be thought that I am taking liberties. Perhaps, as Cr Edwards has a motor car, like myself, he feels a delicacy in getting the work done. I ■ move that tne council have Ayson'e Hill on the Main South road metalled, conditional on the motor associations giving a £50 subsidy. Cr Edwards.: I could not get men to do the work. I want to give outlets from farms first before I get this done. The Chairman: Like Cr Begg, J don't care to interfere in another member's ridmg, but thie matter has been hanging off too long. The road is a disgrace to the council, and eo tho council should gee that the work is dene, seeing that there is ample, funds for it. I will support the motion. Or Clarke said it had been mentioned that the road was a disgrace to the council. If that was eo the council should not allow the disgrace to continue. The motion was carried.
