—In commenting; upon Dr Stanley Shaw's book, "William of Germany," the Saturday Review expresses regret that he did not obtain from some sailor the full version of a story which has never yet been printed, of how the Emperor once steamed through the lines of the British fleet while it was manoeuvring in Danish waters. The news, we are told, suddenly went forth to the fleet that the Emperor in his yacht was near by, and at once the British Admiral prepared to honour him. The men and the officers, who wore thinking of dinner, had to dress in hot haste, and jnet in time they were able to* draw up and give him a great reception. He stood on the bridge of his yacht, cold and stern, with a bare acknowledgment. He ootild not hide the anger he felt at the unexpected presence of a foreign fleet so near his own waters; and, on the other hand, the anger of the officers and crews, who had turned out thus only to be coolly snubbed, is quite as easy to imagine. Ordinarily, the great qualities of tho German Emperor include generosity, which in that ease was wanting. The dangerous spark in him seems always to have beon sudden impulse. In observance of an annual custom some centuries old the Crown recently sent from one of the royal parks four fat docs to the Lord Mayor of London, three to the sheriffs, and one each to tho recorder, chamberlain, town clerk, common sergeant, and remembrancer. Bucks in the same proportion aro sent to these civic functionaries in Ju{s.
