Mr Archibald F. Nicoll (late of Christchurch and Auckland) has just been elected a member of the Society ol Scottish Artists. Twelve new members ,were proposed and voted for on submission of work; only four were elected and the New Zealand artist was one of tnese. Mr Nicoll, who has been living in Scotland for tl'.e nast two yea.rs, having a studio at 34 York place, Edinburgh, has' recently been spending a little while at Concarneau, South prittany, sketching harbour and fishing boats principally. Since his return ho has disposed of o«o of his oil paintings, a market scene, to Mr Jas. Paterson, R.S.A. During the autumn the New Zealander had exhibited at tho Liverpool Autumn Exhibition, at the Manchester City Art Gallery, and at tho Royal Scottish Water Colour Society, where one picture painted at Concarne'au was hung on the line. At tho present moment a fair-sized oil landscape—"Afternoon, Brittany"—hangs on the line at the exhibition of the Society of Scottish Artists.

Sir Claude Phillip?, the art critic of the Daily Telegraph, makes reference to the work of tho' artists who are now showing at the landscape exhibition, held at the gallery of the Koyal Society of Painters in Water Colours. Of the exhibits of a New Zealand artist he writes:—"Mr Leslie Thomson still seeks in landscape for long horizontal lines in parallels, as expressing those calmer aspects of the fair world which ho prefers. An exception, not in the mode of composition but as regards mood and intention, is his ambitious fantasy, "Sunset." A huge globe of fire, filling the whole canvas w:th its rays of red-gold, just touches with its edges the bosom of gently rippling blue waters, enveloping in the glow many nude figures of nymphs, or fair mortals, which- are grouped together with a somewhat academic elegance on the seashore. In .'On the Exq' the opaque surface of waters, yellowish white, in a curious veiled illumination, is well given."
Tho Athletic News states that the dispute between L. B. Todd, the colonial threequarter back of the Wigan team, and the officials at Central Park, has advanced another stage during the week. The New Zealander, at his own request, has been placed on the transfer list, and as the fee can be regarded as fairly moderate, early developments are anticipated.
