TECHNICAL SCHOOL MANAGERS.

The monthly meeting of the Technical School Managers, held yesterday afternoon, was attended 'by Messrs T. Scott (chairman), W. A. Scott, Washer, M'KinLiy, Israel, Burnett, Kempihorne, Wilkinson.

Tho Works Committee, in ite report, suggested:—That the director bo authorised to arrango with Mr M'Lellan to transfer trie heavy machinery from the present promisee to the new workshops at the King Edward Technical College, and that he be authorised to arrango for tho erection of the machinery which will be placed in position under the direction of Mr Cunningham. Intimation has been received from tho Education Department that the application for grant-m----aid of machinery, tools, and appliances, forwarded by this committee, has been approved. Your committee therefore now asks for permission to indent the machinery and appliances, and after obtaining quotations to place tho orders for the benches «ind tools with local firms.—The report was adopted. Tho Finance Committee recommended : — That, the chairman and the treasurer be appointed to pign the receipt required by the trustees of tlic Dunedin Savings Bank for the sum of £750, tho bank's second donation to the funds of tho school ■ that the board authorise the chairman (Mr T. Scott). Mr T. W. Keinptborne, and the director to arrange with tho bank for an increase in tho amount required as overdraft; that accounts and salaries amounting to £586 130 4d be passed for payment.—Tho report \vas considered in committee and adopter!. Tho Appointments Committee reported as follows:-—Having obtained further information regarding tlie candidates placed on tin* short list of selection for tilio position of instructor in charge of tho mechanical engineering department, your committee is iinablo to recommend any of the applicants. It is suggested that applications for the position be invited in Melbourne «ind Sydney and in Groat Britain. The resignation of Miss Keliy. assistant teacher of shorthand and bookkeeping, has ibecn received. To provide for the increased attendance «inrl to fill the vacancy created by tho resignation of Miss Kelly, tho. appointment, of Miss C. Nealo, a certificated teacher, at a salary of £110 per annum, and of Mr G. W. Reid, teacher of bookkeeping, at. £150 per annum, the latter being required for forenoons mlv, ifi recommended. The death of Mr A. 11. Burton, teacher of elocution, took place last month. Tho committee recommends that tie class be discontinued in tho meantime. Tln> reply from tho Superannuation Board etiitcs that teacher., at present on the staff may join tho fund on condition that each r.p.plicant furnishes a medical certificate of good health and undertakes to pay arrears of contributions, with interest thorcon. Tho committee recommends the loard to insist upon all tho members of the st.iff becoming contributors to the fund. In reply to the questions submitted, tho Superannuation Board states that trenchers who are already contributors to tho fund ami are employed by the Technical School Board for evening work only, must, pay superannuation on the * amount they receive for such evening work. Tho director has therefore been instructed to hereafter deduct tho amount from salaries, and also collect, arrears.—The report was adopted, and regret at the death of Mr Burton was placed on record. The Director reported as under:— The day Technical School opened with a, roll number of 261, an increase of 60 on last year's number. When the evening classes are opened at least one additional teacher will bo required for the day staff. It seems to me. it, will be inconvenient to conduct evening classes in the engineering workshop during tho first session of tho evening classes. Miss Alberta Paterson having resigned her interest in ono of tho Callander scholarships, I recommend that the name of Miss Margaret Coatee be substituted in the award of scholarships. I direct tho attention of the board to the need for fixing a minimum of attendance for the establishing and continuance of the classes conducted in suburban centres.—The report was adopted, the number pupils to attend suburban classes being fixed at a minimum of 20.

It was decided that tho annual distribution of certificates should take place on March 20.

The architect's certificate for a progress payment of £2029 on the new building vns referred to the Finance Committee, with power to act.

The Education Board wrete that the Kducation Department had intimated Mm tho number of managers to represent bodies , ontributiug to the funds had been fixed as follows for the current year :—Dunedin Cifrv Council, four: Technical Classes Association *;„<;: Otago Education Board, three; Maori Hill Borough Council, one; St. Kikh Borough Council, one; Mornineron Borough Council one; Port Chalmers Borough Council one-' Mosgiel Borough Council, one; Groe.n Tsland Borongh Council, one; Taieri County Council, one; Ohago Emrjloyore' Association, one: Bay Town Board, one; Ot.acro Pharmaceutical Association, one; and Labour unions. one; —total, 23. Tho trustees of the Dun edin Savings Bank were also entitled to elect. one manager if they thought fit.—Rocom-d.
