SUPPLYING A NATIVE WITH LIQUOR.
A HEAVY FINE. (Peok Otra Own Cobkestoxdkht.) HAWERA, February 18. A charge of supplying a Native with liquor occupied the attention of Mr Kenrick, S.M., at Hawera, and in one case where a Maori woman named Raima gave whisky to her husband, who is a ■prohibited person, a heavy fine was imposed. She said she got the liquor from a European.
Counsel for the defence pointed out that she was really a victim of Native custom and generosity. She bore a good reputation. The woman persisted that she did not know the European who gave her the bottle ot whisky. He was under the influence of liquor, and, once she got possession of the bottle, she "cut, ,, not taking any notice of the man.
His Worship said there we're too many of these cases, and the accused was liable to a £50 fine. If the Natives would give reliable information as to who supplied the liquor the trouble would soon cease. If they would not dojjso, they would have to pay much heavier fines in future. In the present wise he would inflict a fine of £5, with costs amounting to £3 15s 6d.
