ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

WANUANUI, January 00. A lad named Wilton, who was coming to Waiigatnii in the Auckland express, nih jerked from the platform of tlio train at l'orewa, near Mutton, yesterday. He- was not missed by those on t.lie train, lie. fell heavilv on his h-ead and hands, but managed to walk some distance to a house, where lie collapsed, and became unconscious. Medical aid was sought, and tho Jad whs subsequently brought to tho Wan-ganui Hospital. No botifts were broken. Tho sufferer is progressing satirifactorily. The body of James Stevenson, who had been miseaiig Binco Monday, was found near Kaisvhake by the Natives this morning. RI'KIjTON, January 30. The inquest on l'j. Downie, who was killed in the Energetic mine on I.be 17th inst., was rieumed to-day. Mr Kva.ns, general mana,ger, recalled, refused to give details as to tho salaries paid. The Coroner ruled that the question was irrelevant. _ No new evidence was clicited, and the jury returned a verdict of accidental death, adding a rider to the cfi'cct tliat t.ho accident was duo to dioobedicnce of the orders of the mriio manager, and recommending as a safeguard to the workmen that strict attention bo paid in future to the mine manager's orders.
As the result of an accidcnt which is to bo tho subject of further investigation, John Burfoot, a youth 16 yoars of age, died in tho Invoreargill Hospital at a lat« hour on Thursday night. Tho particulars are not very clear, but so far as then- could bo gloaned lrom several sources it appears that Burfoot was riding a bicycle in the vicinity of Waianiwa. Ho is s;;icl to have been employed by -Mrs Marshall, and was going towards her house. He was followed by a motor car, which was owned and driven by Mr George Stone, of Spar Bush. Mr Stone was carrying a passenger. The report of tte accident given to the police by tho occupants of the car has it that Burfoot was riding along the edge of a newly-gravelled portion of the road, when an Attempt was made to pass ihim. It was stated that at this juncture Burfot swerved across the road for somo unknown reason. The car struck l:im immediately and passed over him. When picked up it was at once seen that ha was seriously injured and lie was brought into town and admitted to the hospital early in the evening. No hope for his recovery was held out after a.n examination had been made, and shortly afterwards he expired.
