MAHENO'S GEARED TURBINES.

The new geared liigh-prcssure turbines for the Union Company's steamer Maheno are on board the steamer Kumara, which arrived ht Auckland a few days ago from Liverpool. The turbines weigh about 12 tons and 106 tons respectively, and are of the very latest type. Several propeller shafts, propellers, and a quantity of boring out gear is also on board for the Mahcno's refitting. The Maheno is at present driven by three prooellers with power supplied by three of Parson's ordinary marine turbines, one turbine driving one propeller. The Kumara will discharge tho machinery at Port Chalmers, and it is oxpccted that the Maheno will be withdrawn from the Auck-land-Sydney service about the beginning of April, and procced to the southern port to have tho present turbines removed and tho new ones installed. This will occupy .about six or eight weeks, and ,will entail a great deal of -work on the part of tho company's shore staff and the ship' 6 engineers. The centre propelling shaft will lie entirely removed, and tho vessel will in future be driven by two wing or side propellers. The Maheno's present estimated horse-power is about 6500, but when she is ready for sea agaiD it is expected that 6he will have a greatly increased horsepower, and will also develop a much faster turn of speed.
