PROBLEM 4086,
By J. Geo Be e.
[Buck.]
"Whit® to play and win.
In conversation with a player recently, a certain class of problem was referred to. This illustrates the point that was alluded to, and is one of the very best of its kind we can recall. The author is noted for his fine compositions.—Ed O.W. GAMES. Following aire the 17th and 18th game® played in the Jordan v. Henderson match. The notes are by Henderson ill the Pittsburg Dispatch. Game 8923.—"Denny" (10 14, 22 18). Black: Jordan. White: Henderson.
(a) There was a splendid "cook" behind this move at one time, as shown, further on. (b) Stops the "cook." Jordan had been put wise to tho situation by Ginsberg, probably at tie expense of a game. Ginsberg generously showed it rno at tho American tourney, and as JoTdan is about the only firstclass player who adopts the 11 16 defence in this opening, it vfas especially got up for his benefit. However, at that tiino the opening failed to appear. Here is the "cook": —
Then 8 11, 22 18, and "Whit© wins.
(c) From here it seems a forced White win. (d) 11 15, 19 16, 12 19, 23 16, 14 18, 22 17, 18 22, 17 14, 10 17, 21 14, 22 31, 16 11, 31 24, 28 10, 2 6, 10 7, 6 10, 1-1 9, 1 5, 9 6, 20 24, 7 2, and White should win.
(e) It is doubtful if this is the strongest move: 22 17 at least, tempts 9 13, then 17 14, 11 16, 26 22, 7 10, 14 7, 3 10, 22 18, 4 8, 18 15, 27, 15 6, 1 10, 23 18, 16 23, 18 14, and although a draw, it is strong for White. (f) From here a highly interesting game results.
(g) 8 12 would be followed by 14 9, White for choice.
(h) 20 24 looks good here, and persuade a neat draw, thus: 20 24, 2f7 20, 19 23, & 21, 13 17, 32 27, 23 32, 31 27, 32 23, 24 19, 23 16, 20 4, 5 9, drawn.
(i) 18 15. 9 18, 15 8, 3 12, 2 11 is good for White, hut Black gets two kings first, and with careful, play would never be in any danger. (j) Seems inferior to 30 25, thus: 30 25, 6 13, 25 22, 82 27,. 22 15, 13 17, 7 10, 14 7, 3 10, 27 23, 11 16, 17 22, 59, 28 24, 20 27, 31 21, drawn.
(k) 1 5, 10 14, with a view of squeezing through 13 17, draws.
Variation 1.
