AN UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON. January 11. After running a dead heat in a race at Ascot, Tourmuloria and Clarebrook deadheated in the run-off. Tourmalcno won in tho second run-off. NOTES BY SENTINEL. Glenmore, Marton, and Prince Laddo were amongst the arrivals at Wellington last week. ! Oarolus has made sufficient recovery from an attack of tho strangles to rejoin the active list at Riccarton. The promising two-year-old colt Goodnight recently injured one of hie legs, and may not sport silk again this season. Midnight Sun and Culprit will be ridden by L. Wilson in their engagements at tho Wellington Cup meeting. It is reported that Ladoga, who is galloping well, will bo ridden by R. Berry in tho Wellington Cup. Berry won a- couple of races on the Sir Laddo griding last season. Tho trotting stallion Kl Carbine, purchased by Mr John Porter, of North Otago, was bbokrd to leuvo Sun ITrancisco on December 10 in the Moan.-i. Air F 15 ll'.-o' mri patent clectr:c starting- barrier 'was used in several races at tho Auckland summer meeting, and seemed to act wellA. Wilson, who has won a race or two with Baritone, has purchased a sister to the Finland—Do Murska gelding from Mr A. S. Kl worthy. Dc Murckiv is a sister to Grand Opera, the dnr.i of Soldiers' Chorus, Tannhauscr. and Chorubini. Whilst on a visit to Auckland Messrs Pyne. Gould and Wanklyn, together with other southern visitors, went out to Ellerslie in company with Mr Hartkrd, 6ecretary to

tho Auckland Racing Club, in order to inspect the inner workings o* the new totalisator. Jt is said that the Canterbury Jockey Club is seriously considering the advisableness of purchasing a similar machine.

With iho help of foreign money brought by visitors (o the Auckland Exhibition, the totnli.sa.tor figures tor tlio four days' racing at Ellorelic show a big increase on tho previous best, utid the club easily beat; its own record of last year, the figures being: 1913, £225,410; 1912, £1E0,365 10s—an Jncreaso of no loss than £45,054- 10s. The Auckland Racing Club is the first one to put through ■;r!Q0,O00 or over during one- race meeting. With the £58,289 put through at the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting during tho three days, tho northerners got close to the £300,000 during their summer racing carnival. The acceptances received for the Wairio meeting suggest that fairly good fields will bo seen out, although tho class of horpo engaged does not rank very high. The field o£ 14 engaged in the Steeplechase should make it the most interesting raco on the curd. New Zealand's cquino population suffers a mild shrinkage this week by the departure of More. Tip Top, Glenfin, Kostroma, Crokl Wave, Hunckaha, Export, Optimcforrn, and eome polo ponies for Melbourne. Kostroma could have been sold at an advance on what Mr Henry paid for the Stepniak gelding, and the Australians who saw Gunboat rnpo in the Commonwealth will bo interested in Tin Top, who is a brother to tho Calibre—Ripple gelding. Although tho fire at tho Harp of Erin stables had euch disastrous results, matters could easily have been worse ha<l the outbreak occurred a few hours earlier. R. Hannon and S. Waddell both had their horses in the same range of stabling as that destroyed, but tho former left for the Waikato on the Saturday afternoon, while the Hon. J. D. Ormond's horses wero railed south on Sunday. Both trainers (writes Whalebone) had a number of valuable horses under their charge, and tho consequences, had they still been there on Sunday evening, would have been terrible. 'At ono time there seemed every prospect of all thestabling, and the Harp 'of Erin itself, going, but good work by the Ellerslio and Green Lane Brigades saved tho buildings. LEAGUE FOOTBALL. (Pib United Press Association.) ' AUCKLAND, January 12. Following on tho recent disqualification of tho Auckland Rugby League an executive meeting was called for to-night for tho purpose of electing new officere. Tho meeting -was confined to representatives of the North Shore and Ponsonby Clubs, who have decided to throw in their lot with the New Zealand Council. A new executive, with a treasurer and secretary, was formed, and altogether the outlook for the coming season is very bright. AMATEUR ATHLETICS. fPin United Pbess Association.) WELLINGTON, January 12. The Wellington Centre of tho Now Zealand Amateur Athletic Association decided to-night that the Wellington provincial championships bo held on February 14.
