BOWLING

DOMINION TOURNAMENT. RINK PLAY. First Day—Monday. The Dominion of New Zealand Bowling Championship Tournament was commenced in Dunedin yesterday. The next week or 10 days are likely to eee some of the finest players in New Zealand trying conclusions with each other, on the local greens. Over 400 bowlers are participating, 80 of whom have come from the North Island. The entries received were as follow:—Rinks, 80; Doubles, 176; and Singles, 192 The weather on the opening day was very satisfactory. One or two light showers had little or no effect on the greens, and although play was delayed in the morning, the lost time had been made up again when the second round started in the afternoon. The best of arrangement for the meeting had been made by the Management Committee, with the result that everything connected with a somewhat complicated system of play worked very smoothly during the day. Yesterday was given over to rink play, which was divided into three olasses—Championship, Southland (those who have two losses) arid Otago (losers in the Southland rinks). In this way a considerable amount of play Jβ provided for the players even though they may not succeed in becoming winners. On the Kaituna Green many of the gamee, particularly in the first round, gave rise to very keen contests and close finishes. The progress of Wylie's Newtown rink and Hain's Southland team was watched with 'considerable interest, and they both fulfilled expectations • by scoring wins in each of the first two rounds, and thus a bye in the third. M'Leod, of Taieri, and Abbott, of NorthEast "Valley, were the others to earn a similar honourable respite. An extraordinarily close finish was witnessed in one of the last games of the day between Wilkinson (Roslyn) and Hughan (Uarterton). At the twentieth head they were a tie, with 21 points each, and at the final end. each laid a bowl within about six inches of thfe jack. So evenly placed were these two that the services of the umpire had to be called in, and after careful measurement he gave the verdict to Roslyn by about the sixteenth of an inch.

Players on the\ Roslyn Green were able to keep to the time-table, although in convenienced at times by the showers, The green was well sheltered by the high scrub fence, and no trouble -was experienced from the wind, which came in occasional strong puffs from the north-west. The keenness had been taken from the green by the rain,-but it could scarcely be called heavy. No'.particularly remarkable play was recorded at the Valley durinsr the day, but it is worthy of note that I. Woolf'e rink from the United Club in Christchuroh, which won the New Zealand Bowling Association's championship in that city last season, and subsequently defeated the champion rink of the Northern Bowling Assocation. last both of its matches yesterday. By doing , so it has now been put out of t'ho championship. DUNEDIN GREEN. ' ~; Champion Rinks. ' First Round. Wm. Hoi'g, — Grindley, J. Pietersen, and W. M'Laren (Dunedin) 28 beat J. Nelson, J. The Kaituna Club last night extended a cordial welcome to all bowlers, and a very large number of those who are taking part in the tournament availed themselves of an opportunity of forgathering with brother bowlers from other parte of the dominion. The club room was packed in all parts, end the evening being beautifully fine, the spacious balcony was also utilised by the company.. Mr W. Eudey, president, of the Kaituna Club, occupied the chair, and carried the gathering along with a merry swing. Proceedings opened with the toast of " The King," after which the following toaste were also honoured: " Dominion of New Zealand Association," proposed by Mr Eudey and responded to by Mr J. J. Mallow, Mr Casey, and Colonel Collins; " The Dunedin Centre," proposed by Mr C. H. Hughes (responded to by Air W. Hogg); " The Visitors," proposed by Mr C. J. Payne (responded to by Professor Walker and Mr Thomas Bueh); and " The Kaituna Club," proposed by Mr Veitch (Wellington). The musical programme was contributed to by Messrs T. Parata (who also delighted the company with a Maori haka), E. Hill, C. Amtman, W. Paget Gale, J. K. Macfie. H. Campbell, C. J. Payne, T. Holgato, and P. Seelye. Mr W. Paget Gale was the accompanist.

In the course of his reply, Mr Marlow (president of the Council) 6aid that at the early stages of any union, whether in marriage, in partnership, or in clubs, the early days must be a period of compromise—the parties must bo prepared to give and take. Ho was pleased to be able to say that he had found that spirit among (he northern members, and the southern members were certainly not going to be behind the northern in giving effect to the same spirit. —(Applause.) They would, no doubt, have differences of opinion, but from the personnel of the council he felt safe in saying that they would have difference of opinion without dissension.—(Applause.) Several of the visitors took tl'o opro'hv"ty of thanking t'hc, Dunedin bowxrs for treir hospitality.
