The Observer's New York correspondent states that, owing to the change of the U.S.A. tariff on foodstuffs, imports of Argentine and Australian beef have largely increased. SYDNEY, January 12. A fire wiped out one side of the main street in Ganmain (?Balmain), destroying eight business premises. Mr Dan O'Connor, ex-Postmaster-gcne-ral, is lying ill and in a critical condition. The Sir William Lyne Memorial Committee has decided to place a marble bust of the late statesman in the Federal Parliament House. Twenty-five competitors completed the return from Melbourne to Sydney in the motor reliability test. (Received Jan. 13, at 0.40 a.m.) The shipping returns for last year show that the total tonnage dealt with at th'e port of Sydney was 10,257,002—an increase of 799,379 tons. The increase in crews was 10,305, and the wages paid to crews totalled £138,826. The figures disclose a decrease in the number of desertions.
