DANGEROUS CROSSINGS.

POSITION AT PALMEHSTON NORTH.

(Faosi Ode Own CobAespondent.)

PALMERSTON N,, December 23. Two more narrow escapes at the Palmerston railway crossings occurred to-day. At the present time 16 expresses are passing through the square daily, while no fewer than 60 trains of various sorts proceed in and out of Palmerston every.24 hours. The crossings are unquestionably a menace, and prompt measures should be taken to prevent further accidents. A Wanganui train, drawn up at the edge ol the post office crossing in tho square was nearly responsible for an accident to-day. It quite obstructed tho view of the rails alongside, upon which a goods' train was coming into the town at the usual speed. A well-known local resident, unable to see the goods train, was just in the act of crossing the rails in lu's motor when a warning shout by a spectator showed him his danger in the nick of time. A young man driving a milk cart towards a railway crossing at Terrace end, oblivious of the fact that an express train was approaching at a fairly fast pace, was saved by a yeil from a bystander, tho driver pulling" up quickly as the train dashed past a second later.
