OPENING OF PARLIAMENT. MR MEAGHER ELECTED SPEAKER. Prwi Asiocialion—By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, December 23 (Received Dec. 23, at 10.30 p.m.)
The new Parliament was opened to-day by Commission, and the members were sworn in.
The Governor's Message simply referred to the election of the Speaker and the passing of Supply.
Mr R. Meagher, caucus nominee, was the only candidate, and was elected Speaker.
Before the meeting of the House the caucus discussed the claims of Mr Morton, late Speaker, Mr M'Gowen, and Mr Meagher for the Speakership, and the voting gave Mr Meagher a majority over the combined vote for the other two.
