FIRE AT CAVERSHAM.

On Saturday night about 8.30 a fire broke out in a four-roomed wooden house at No. 5 St. Helier's court, Caversham. The house ■was occupied bv Mr Edmond Clancy and his wife, and belonged to Mr David Robertson, who lives next door. The fire was first noticed by Leslie a.nd Thomas Robertson, sons of the owner. They had passed the house not long prior to the outbreak, which made itself apparent by the shattering of the glass in the back bedroom window and the sudden bursting forth of the flames. The City Fire Brigade was summoned, and the motor arrived at the sceno of the fire about 3.45. but the flames had spread with such rapidity that by this time the house was practically gutted, and the attentions of the brigade were devoted to tho adjoining house, which was saved with some difficulty. Mr Clancy stated that her husband left home for work on Saturday about 9 a.m., and sho left the house about 11 a.m. to visit her mother, who occupies the Occidental Hotel. When she left (hero were no fires burning in the house, and she took care to lock all the doors. The origin of the fir/ 1 is therefore a mystery. The house was insured in tho Standard office for £150, but Mr Robertson estimates that he lias lest a similar amount as the result of the fire. The furniture was insured in the Commercial TJnion ollice for £150. It belonged to Mr Clancy, who states that ho was underinsured by about £100.
