CRICKET
(Pee United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, October 12. Owing to the wet weather on Saturday cricket and other sports were postponed CHRISTCHURCH, October 11. The cricket competition opened to-day in splendid weather. Tho following are the results of the First Grade matches:—St. Albans, 39; Svdenham, 245 for eight wickets (F. Woods 138' not- out, AV. R, Patrick 53). West Christchurch. 200 (0. S. Bryan Brown. 63); Lin wood, 25 for six wickets. Riccarton 276 (W. B. Whitta 53); East Chrietchurchl 21 for no wiokets. The Saturday holiday has resulted in a lot of new players appearing. As the Australian tour is imminent the interest is the greatest known for years. The Opoho Club held a most successful practice ah ■Saturday. There was a large attendance, including some very promising new members. Tho benefit of playing on their own ground, which was noticed in the previous practice, was oven more in cvidenco on Saturday. A great amount of work has been done to the ground by the members of this club, and arrangements have already been concluded to connect the water supply to the reserve.
