The Woglinde will load at Savannah and New York under the auspices of tho A, and A Line, and will leave the latter port for Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin, arriving here on October 20. Tho Twickenham completed her discharge last evening, and sailed for Newcastle direct. _ Mr W. H. G. Yates, late of the Zealandic, is now first officer of the Athenic, which arrived at Wellington on Monday from Home. Mr James M'Alpine, Government inspector of machinery, who died at Auckland on Sunday last, joined the Union Steam Ship Company in 1899. In 1911 be was appointed chief engineer of tho turbine steamer Loongana. A short time afterwards, however, he resigned from the servico to accept -the New Zealand Government position of Inspector of Machinery at Auckland. : _ The New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Ruapehu arrived at Port Chalmers yesterday morning from Bluff to load a large quantity of frozen meat, etc. On completion of her loading 6he will proceed to northern ports to fill up. The Cape Breton left New York on June 21, and after discharge of portion of het oil cargo at Auckland, Wellington, and Lyttelton came on to this port yesterday. Sne arrived shortly after midday, and wus berthed at tho Rattray street wharf. She has brought the usual quantity of oil for this port, and after discharge she will sail on Tuesday, probably for Newcastle. Mr J. H. Wclfjord, speaking at the annual meeting of Messrs J. H. Welsford and Co., remarked that, while _ freight earnings had reached a point during the last 12 months which was quite unprecedented, the fact remained, speaking of shipping companies generally, that in. the majority of cases, after due allowance for proper depreciation had been made over the last seven years, it was extremely doubtful whether interest at 5 per cent, per annum would be realised. In some instances no , doubt better had been done, but, on tho other hand, there were many cases where full depreciation remained greatly in arrear. In not a few cases substantial reductions of capital had _ been necessary in order to meet the ' circumstances created, which all proved the uncertainty of tho investment and tho necessity of building up reserves. The strain of unrest in. the labour situation and the great increase 'of cost of 6toamer operation throughout the world occasioned much anxiety to steamship managers, and made for their serious consideration when the abatement of prosperity occurred, as it would.
THE MORAYSHIRE. TROUBLE WITH ENGINES. • (Pes United Press Association.) . AUCKLAND, October 2. The steamer Morayshire, which arrived from London this morning after a lengthy passage of 68 da.ys, had a breakdown to her engines 122 miles past Capetown. This necessitated putting in there for- repairs, which occupied two days On tho voyage to Hobart several stops had to be made to enable tho engineers to effect slight repairs. The miehaps did not affect any of the big carts of her machinery. Tho Morayshire brought 50 immigrants, a large proportion of whom will land at Auckland.
