APPLICATION FOR A LICENSE
WRIT OF MANDAMUS SOUGHT. AN IMPORTANT POINT. (Per United I'n.sss Association.) GISBORNE, September 1. The ease of J. R. Quiji v. R. S. Florance,' S.M., an application for a writ of mandamus to compel the magistrate to hear the plaintiff's application for a publican's license, was ( mentioned at the Supreme Court before Mr Justice Cooper to-day. This was a case which was brought to compel Mr Florance, S.M., to hear an application for a publican's license which had already been refused by Mr B2rton, S.M., of Gisborne, on the ground that the police report was unfavourable. His Honor stated that the case was one of such importance that he would like the assistance of counsel, and held that Mr Florance should have the assistance of counsel at the Crown's expense. The ruling in this case, his Honor stated, would be of importance to the whole of the dominion. The case will probably he taken to-morrow. ■ >.
