The monthly 'meeting, of the Clutha County Council was held on Friday; present—Crs J. Clarke (chairman), J. C. Begg, J-, Edwards, J. R. Mitchell) W. Hay, J as; Cumming, W. Quin, and \V. Nicol. - ENGINEER'S BEPORT.. . : The Engineer (Mr J. Itanlsay) reported as follows for the month: — Bridges.—Repairs to Roinahapa bridge will be completed this week, and timber, has been sent forward for repairs to Heckler's bridge (South Molyneux Riding). The recent floods carried away two bridges —one over the Karoro Creek on Randall's road and the footbridge over the Kaihiku Stream at Cockburn's ford, A large culvert was washed away on the main Waikawa road (near S. Little's/ Cbaslands); this has been lepaired. Thirteen 2ft concrete pipes, will be required'for new cu!velt on Wilson's road, Glenomaru. '1 ho approaches to Goldsmith's bridge were washed away, but repairs have how been effected. The bridge on Manning's road is unsafe for traffic, and will require to be renewed. The bridge near the Cap quarry has been redeeked. A number of washouts have occurred on various roads, and the surfacemon have been instructed to. r.opuir all the dangerous parts as soon as possible. Richardson. Riding.—The .watertables have been cleaned out on Fyfe's and Waiwere station roads, and a truck of metal has been carted out to fill up somo dangerous holes On the Clinton-Puerua road. An 18in culvert will be required near It-.Lcrts Bros.', and also at CWs. farm, Two new culverts have been put in on Manning's road. , Clutha Riding.—lß9 cubic yards of maintenance metal have, been put down on the vert on Wibon's road, Glenomaru. The Kaihiku ford, near Cockburn's, was blocked by a large willow tree, which was-brought down by the recent flood. A traction engino was procured and the tree removed. The watertables have been cleaned out on Mackay's road. t Catlins Biding—Two new culverts liaye beep piit in on the Lakeside road, and ono :6ri Big Mill Creek road. Several slips had to be cleared away on Lakeside road, between Berncy's and Ratanui. Five new culverts will bo required on Long Point road to replace old wooden culverts which have got beyond repair. An 18in culvert on Pullar's road has been repaired, and 10 loads of metal have been put down on Han* ning's road to fill up some dangorous holes. South Molyneux Riding:—A number of washouts 'have occurred on various roads, and-these are being attended to. Pomahaka Riding.—Fourteen yards of maintenance metal have been carted out for repairs to the Main South road, near Taylor's homestead. The cutting, on M'Neur's road has been repaired, and tables cleaned out. Tenders have been called for .building hut, metalling Pomahaka Downs road, metalling Upper Clydevale road, and metalling Jones's toad and Tunnel Hill. The engineer was instructed to replace the bridge at Cockburn's (Te Houka). The report Was then 1 adopted. 'TENDERS. ; _ Three tenders were received for the erection. of a hut. on wheels for Catlins Riding, and were left with the member ftir the riding and chairman to deal with. • ■ Fpr metalling five chains on the Upper Clydesvale road, T. Sharp submitted • a tender of £24 15s.—Tender declined, and engineer; to get the, metal carted from quarry. ' Mr Waller's tender of Is 6d per, yard for quarrying 750 yards of metal at Arthiirton was accepted. ' I Mr Henry Jones's tender of £4 per chain for metalling Jones's road, Glenomaru, was accepted CORRESPONDENCE. ' The Valuation Department forwarded notice of Voucher for payment to. the council of £509 10a 7d, being subsidy on rates.— Received. ,Tho Treasury Department notified that £235 15s had been remitted to the council's credit for access- to block XIV, Rimu • £30 4s 5d for formation of roads, Otanoinomo settlement; £12 18s 9d, for Conical Bills settlement roads.—Received.

The Receiver of Land Revenue, Dunedin, wrote that' £196 12s 2d, being. royalty " thirds" and " fourths" accured from October 28, 1912, to April 26, 1913, had been paid to the council's credit.—Received. The Assistant Under-Secretary of the Public Works Department forwarded a copy of a notice in the Gazette exempting portion of northern side of district road on section 19, block XXXIII, Clutha, from the provisions of' section 117 of tjie Public Worlp Act, subject to certain .conditions as to building line—Received. Tho Aeeistant Under-secretary of tho Public Works Department forwarded a copy of proclamation taking land for a road, and closing a road through block X, .Glenomaru; also the same for block I, Woodland.- Received '

The Public Works Department notified following authorisations of grants:—Waipahi to Pukerau •(£ for £), £100; Owakn to Purekireki (£ for" £), £3000; Wight ■road, £75; Pomahaka Downs raid, block XIII, Pomahaka (£ for £), £50; Jones road (£'for £), £50.—Cr Mitchell said that it was 12 months ago since the grants had been made for Clydevale, and yet there was not_ a penny available. Every now and again. he had moved that these grants be applied for, but they got nothing yet.—Cr Hay moved that a general application be made for all grants—Carried. ' The Hon. jas. Allen (Minister of Finance) wrote that the petition signed by . Thoa. Chapman and 65 others asking that a bridgo bo erected over the Pomahaka River a t Burke's ford had .been forwarded to Mr Maloolm for presentation, and that he (Mr Allen) would do his best to assist the petition—Received. The Hon. W. Fraser (Minister of Public Works) wroto that applications for grants would receive careful consideration when tho Estimates " were 'being prepared.—Received. The Deputy-superintendent of the New Zealand State Guaranteed Advances Office wrote that the board hid resolved provisionally to approve of a loan of £500 for the purpose.of metalling a section of ( tho Clinton-vVyndham road at the rate of 4| .per cent.,, exclusive of sinking fund.—Steps to be taken to raise the loan. The District Engineer .New Zealand Railways wrote, with, reference to road approach to Owaka railway station, that the'department was prepared to/bear half-cost ol the work proposed by' the oouncil, estimated at £93 lis bd. —Received. 'ihe Commissioner of Crown Lands, Dunedin, wrote that his attention had been drawn to a report m the press, wherein it appeared that the council had sold the timber on section 4-, block VI, Woodland, to Messrs Leggatt and Campbell for £10., It the council was about to construct this road, it was quite entitled, to sell the timber or there would be no objection to its doin£ bo provided tihat tho money received was spent on clearing tho road. ;If the council did not intend taking cither of these lines of action ho would ask under what authority iit had sold the timber.— Cr Mitchell: I'move that, the ..clerk >vrite to Mr Wilrhot and ask him what authority he has to interfere about timber on county roads.—Carried. ; The Clerk of the Tuapeka County Oouncil wrote that his council had rejectedtile Government plans for the Pomahaka bridge, and propped to' do tho work itself on its engineer's plans, subject to the Clutha County's. approval—The Tuapeka County's scheme was approved. Messrs Inder and Cochrane, solicitors, Gore, wrote on behalf of Mr C. W. Body, Kelso, notifying that,' unless something was done to prevent' a recurrence of trouble and injury to their olient's property through flooding from'a. diverted ditch, the council would be held responsible. The damage recently done would take about £12 to repair.—Cr Quin moved,. and it was carried, "That tho engineer again look into the damage done on the swamp road, G!enkenich, with a view to returning tho .water. back to its original channel, and the engi-' neer also' report as to the damage done to Mr C. P. Body's property." ■ Overton Bros., Wharetoa, wrote asking that tfhe work for formation of Camp HijlTuapeka Mouth road, be started a 6 soon aa possible.—Left with, the engineer to get the .work done. '

M'Pluiil, secretary of the Conical Hills Settlors' Association, wrote that at a meeting of the association it was decidod to ask the council to consider the advisability of putting' a surfaceman at that end of the Waipahi Riding, as they considered there, was plenty of work for, a man aJI the year round. Bridges ovor Watt's Creek and Carson's and green's reipiired to bo put on straight away. It was also asked if anything had been done about the level croii3« ing at Conical Hills siding, or if aything had been heard about the proposed Government grant for the Conical Hills , road tip from the siding. A request was also made for poisoned grain for small birds.—Matter is being attended to. Mr R. II A. Jeff, Clinton, wrote drawing aitentipn to the etoto of the side road and the cuttings from " Willovrburn" i«p to Mr I Livingstone's 'pite.—Cr Begg uakl that nothing <*/uld bo done to roads in the locality till tiho wot -weather cleared off. : Messrs J. and W. Bhod<kn, Waiwera, wrote asking permission to erect a talcphone lino the edge of the road leading from tho Waiwera. River to Goorgo road. Messrs Wm. Millar and J. Paterson, Clinton, Wrote regarding the badetate of road near I'opotirnoa. homestead, more particularly Unit part wfcieJi extended about 30 cluing westward,—Engineer to inspect and report to next meeting. . /' I Mj R. J. Allison, l'uerua,. wrote applying for permission to bang a gate on roadline running through sections 3 and 5; Block ix; \y aj-epa, '-during':the 'pleasure of the coi.ncil.— Request granted Mr D, i'mlayson; Loehindorb, wrote drawing attention to the bad state of the road from the Little l'uerua slream to the' homestead, and from Loohindorb to I'urekireki-. The recent floods had also badly washed out the road along the Little l'uerua stream—To be attended to uigently.

Messrs A. T. Harris. George Shaw Wa! ; ker, and Tlios. M'Kenzie. Ijodiindorb, wroto drawing notice to the portion of the new road now being formed through' Mr Ca>pagamian's property, A portion of the new deviation .wae going through bogs which would not carry a liprJit horse, ajid they could not understand ,why the new road had not been put on solid ground. They asked that, before any more money was spent on jt, the chairman and member for the rid* tng visit the place and see what could be done to give a better outlet.—the Engineer explained the position, and the letter was ,received.

Messrs J, G. A Somerville and Sons, Waitapeka. wrote that several of the settiers in tho_ district were desirous of connecting 'their residence. with the writer's office by teloplicne, and oii the settlers' behalf fporm:6s:oh was asked to erect poles along the road lines where necessary.—Por mission granted

Mr D. Fino'Jayson, Loohindorb, ap]>iic<T for permission, to put a gato on roadlinc between sections 5 and 38, Block IX, Warepa—Cranted. , Mr A. C. ICeo and nine others, Clydevale. wroto asking that the . road from Kee's corner to M'Donald's be graded and metalled.—Cr Mitchell explained the position, and moved that Mr Kee be written to informing him that grading would bo done as soon as weather peimitted, and that the metalling would bo done when grants were received; and that it would bo done from both ends.' Cr Mitchell added that the clerk might state in the letter that if' Meesra Overton and Bonny would be agreeable to grants for their roads being transferred to other parts of the riding council would probably apprdvo of it. 1

Mr Gordon R. Mitchell, secretary of the Saleyards Committee, Clydevale, wrote that' it was' proposed to form a. company to crect saleyards at Clydevale, and by direction of committee he applied for a lease of two acres of the Clydevale ferry reserve for a term of 14 years.—Referred to Land Board.

Mr Angus Couotori, Wairuna, wrote drawing attention to the unfinished portion of new road leading throiigh his property, and hoped the oouncil would have it finished 'shortly.—Engineer to inspect tho rqad next time he is in the district.

Mr W. R. M'Kay, Pomahaka, wrote asking permission to plough down gorse the road leading' to old homestead,—Granted, subject to approval of engineer. .

Mr. H. Jones, Owaka,_ wrote that ho was pleased to know something was to be done towards improving *tho road to his holding, and asked that an application to the Government be mado for a small straight-out grant of, say, £50. —Application, to bo forwarded on to Mr Maloolifi.

Mr J. Paterson, hon. secretary of Owaka Library Committee, wrote- asking that the library be made exempted from rates.— Held over. Mr William Sutherland, Otanomomo, wrote asking for use of the South Molyneux grader for rawing and strengthening an embankment on his property.—Granted. ■ MOTIONS. Cr Nicol moved • and Cr Ouirl seconded— "That the bridge on liauning's road, Puerui, be renewed."—Carried. Cr Bcg« moved and Cr Edwards seconded —"That tenders be called for about 120 chains of metalling' on Clinton-Wyndhom' road."—Carried. GENERAL. Cr Edwards moved that nothing be done to Geggie's road in the meantime.—Carried. Owing to the absence of the member, for Catlins hiding, letters from Meesrs James Wright, Joseph Read, William Houreton, W, Chalmers. H. A. Brough, D. Campbell, R. Inglii. William Gwyn, W. Johnston, and W, iSpence were held over to allow tho member.and engineer to deal with them.
