SCARCITY OF SILVER BEET. (Pes United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 28. , Judging by the remarks made by a farmer to a- reporter to-day considerable difficulty is being experienced in obtaining seed of silver beet in Christchurch in the quantities necessary for paddock sowing. Quite a number of farmers intend sowing this forage crop, .and a great many more would do so if the seed was available. Tho Agricultural Department is in the same position as the private growers in regard to the difficulty of securing 6eed of the desired varieties of silver beet for stock-feeding purposes. This year the work of selecting feed has been instituted at the experimental farms, and it is hoped that next autumn small samples of seed of approved varieties will be available for distribution. It is expected that several of the leading seed firms in the dominion will have seed of the varieties recommended by the department on the market next rear.
