A CONTRACT LOST. KEEN COMPETITION FORESHADOWED. Prew Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, August 28. • Mr John Brown, of Newcastle, in his evidence before the Miners' Wages Board, said he was recently offered a two years' contract to supply coal, but lost it, because he could not give a guarantee of continuity of supply. The people negotiating said it would be oil'or coal, and it was oil. He added that the opening of the Panama Canal would cause Newcastle to lose all its trade with the west coast of South America, which would be transferred to the United States. It would also have competition m India and China.
