THE DIRECT STEAMERS.

AUCKLAND,^August 28.—Arrived: Kaikoura (11.30 a.m.), from London, via Teneriffe, Capetown, and Hobart. The Flora sailed yesterday afternoon for Westport, via Oamaru and way ports. The Kotare is loading timber at Waikawa for Akaroa. The Hinemoa arrived off tho Heada from northern lighthouses about 7.30 last evening, and wa6 anchored outside for the night. ;Sho will visit Capo Saunders this morning, and oomo up to Dunedin to load stores this afternoon, probably loaving early on Sunday morning lor the south. Mr F. A. C. Heslop, late of the Wahine, has joined the Waipori as chief ofEoer. The Waipori waa expected to leave Westport last night for Dunedin. The next passenger steamer from Melbourne, via Bluff, will bo the Ulimaroa, which is due here on Tuesday week. She will sail the following day {or Sydney, via Cook Strait. Tho Moeraki is duo to-morrow from Sydney, via Cook Strait, and instead of continuing her voyage to Melbourne to-morrow she will bo withdrawn from the intercolonial service, and will remain hero until September 13, Bailing on that date for Melbourne, via Bluff and Hobart. ' After being placed in position the -newly lengthened ladder was found to be a trifle too short to hoist up to dock level on dredge 222, and arrangements are being made to overcome the difficulty by lowering tho upper pivot and lengthening the brackets. The steamer Ennerdale was signalled off tho Nuggets about noon yesterday, en route from Hobart to Dunedin, with a cargo of timber. She was off the Heads shortly before midnight. She'wiU bo boarded by the health officer early, this mornig, and will afterwards come up to Dunedin to commence discharging her oargo. She is bringing 180,000 feet of hardwood for Dunedin, and 38,000 feet for Port Chalmers.

The Tarawera arrived at noon yesterday from Auckland, via East Coast ports, and as several members of her crew, had not been vaccinated prior to leaving Wellington, the veesel stopped at Port Chalmers for inspection by the local health officer. There .being no suspicious symptoms amongst those examined, the vessel was granted pratiquo and resumed her voyage to Dunedin. Tho crew, it may be mentioned, must now agree to bo vaccinated, that being one of the conditions imposed upon them by the ship's articles. The Tarawera will sail this afternoon for Auckland, via F,aet Coast ports.
