MAGQUARIE ISLANDS.

A PERTINENT QUESTION. (Fhom Ode Own Corbespondent.) WELLINGTON, August 28. In view of recent happenings at the MacqUarie Islands a question by Mr Clark in the House to-day may be regarded as' pertinent. He asked if the Prime Minister would communicate with the Tasmanian Government and, if possible, anange that steps be taken to place the oil industry of the Macquarie Islands on a sound footing, and thus prevent men being misled and practically isolated, as the existing conditions could eventually end only in a serious disaster. In a note to the question -Mr ClaTk read about 500 words of a newspaper extract describing the experiences of the men recently rescued. This urged that a thorough inquiry should be made into tho position and steps taken to place the industry on a satisfactory footing so that men could not be taken down there without proper food or medical comforts. When Mr Clark had finished reading his long extract Mr Davey created a laugh by asking quietly : " And when do you propose to take the second reading?"
