MAORI HILL BOROUGH COUNCIL.
LOAN PROPOSALS AGREED TO. A special meeting of the .Maori Hill Borough Council was held last night for the purpose of considering a report from a committee of the 'whole council as to the proposed expenditure of loan moneys in South and West Wards. The members present were the Mayor (Mr G. Butler), Crs J. Lillie, C. Beeby, A. M'Millan, J. L. Passmore, S. Maxwell, M. Finnerty, and G. Laurie. Cr Passmore 6aid that an inspection had been mudo of the works claimed to bo necessary in South Ward, and submitted it schedule of the proposed expenditure amounting to £2700. He explained the requirements of each locality.—The schedule was agreed to. Cr Finnerty pointed out the necessity for improving the lighting of North Ward streets, and moved that a loan of £300 be raised for that purpose. Cr Lillie seconded the motion, which was carried. Cr M'Millan said that when the loan proposals were before the last meeting of the council he had opposed them on the ground that the expenditure asked for certain streets was excessive. There had, however, been several reductions, and he was now quite willing that the proposals now before them should be submitted to the ratepayers. •
Cr Passmore moved—"That £100 bo! expended on Carrington road, on condition that the' Chapman trustees contribute Dound for pound, and dedicate 1 ! strip of land for widening purposes, and make no claim • m respect of land so dedicated."—Seconded by Cr' Maxwell and carried.
The Town Clerk explained that as security for, the loan liability agreed to it would bo necessary to levy a rate in South Ward, l-3d in West Ward, and yd in North Ward.—He was instructed to give tho nocessary public notices in connection with tho loan proposal^. Cr Lillie suggested that in 'order to majce the provisions of the loan expenditure clear to tho ratepayers a public meeting should bo called to placo the details before them. —The Town Clerk explained that there was no immediate necessity lor such a meeting, as it would be some time before tho poll could be taken.
Cr Lillie suggested that as the loan expenditure had been agreed to ratepayers should not be called on in future to pay half cost of making footpaths fronting their properties.—Cr Laurie said that such a proposal wouid cause ill-feeling, as large numbers of ratepayers had paid Jialf cost of such improvements. C'r Faßsmorc congratulated the members of the council on their decision to raise the loan. It was their duty to see that the streets of the borough wore kept up to a high standard, and he was confident that when the improvement proposed had been carried out their borough would bo regarded as one of the model boroughs of the district.
The Mayor also congratulated the council on its ossont to the loan.
