— Chief Griffiths, Basuloland's new King, is a Roman Catholic, He is just 40 years of age, a man of considerable force of character, and as a lesser chief has shown judicial and administrative gifts of a high order. Ho fully realises the danger to his people of the liquor trafiic, and lie is expected to show the zoal of the convert in enforcing total prohibition. A strong man with initiative and force of character may powerfully impress himself upon the life of the Basuto people, and many friends of tho Basutos hope • that Griffiths will do for his people what Khama has done for his 6ubjects in Bechuanaland. Basutoland, a country about the size of Belgium, is a succession of hills and valleys covered with grass and watered by innumeralbe, etroains. It is rich in CAttle arid yields an abundanco of grain. Its population numbenj 404.000 natives, and about 1000 Europeans. No whito man, other than the missionary, tho official, and the trader, is allowed to eettlo in tha oountrx.
