THE WEATHER

HEAVY RAIN IN DUNEDIN. UNEASINESS ON THE TAIEEI. The rain which set in about 5 o'clock on. Sunday night inorcased in volume as the night wore on, ajid culminated in a steady " downpour all day yesterday, continuing till about 8 o'clook, when it slackened off. Thero was very little wind, and the cloeo, dense rain soon caused the water to bank up in a number of the streets, the gratings in _ the channels becoming blocked. Tho Leith carried a lot of water, and was higher than it has been since the bis flood in North-East Valley 12 months ago last Christmas. .Fortunately no damage has to far been reported in the town or from the country as the result of tho downfall. Captain Easther (Kew) reports that from the time the rain commenced till 10 o'clock last night his rain gauge registered 2.32 in. Mr Jaeobseh. informs us that the fall as ;e----oorded at the Drainage Board pumping station was 2.875 in, The barometer commenced to ri«e again at a little before 6 o'clook last night, and for a while the weather brightened. At an early hour this morning, however, rain wa6 again falling, and the prospects were distinctly unpromising. Advice received from Middlemarcb lad evening stated that, the Taicri River was running; at a. fairly high level, occasioned by heavy rain which had fallen intermittently since Sunday ight. During yesterday the weather became much colder, indicating that snow had fallen on the higher levels. Our informant added that as long as the weather remained oold tl - ere was little danger of a seriou? flood, but residents on the Taieri Plain would do well to be prepared for an emergency. At 5 o'clock last evening the creeks were running full, and the river was still rising, but the rain was by no means so heavy as was the case in the vicinity of Dunedin. Communication with the Taieri lastnislifc elicited the information that tho farmers had removed most of Dheir stock in case of an emergency arising. Tho river had not risen muck, perhaps a foot or a little more. Everything, of course, depended upon what rain was falling in the faok country. TTIO Silverstream and Mill Oreek were very full.
