DEMAND FOR LAND.
DISAPPOINTED APPLICANTS. APPEAL TO PRIME MINISTER. (Pee United Press Association.) PAHIATUA, July.2o. At the conclusion of the Mangatainoka land ballot yesterday the following telegram was sent to the Primo Minister by the president of the Pahiatua District Progressiva Association:—"The Hon. W. F. Massoy, Wellington. Three hundred and fifty disappointed applicants at the Mangatainoka 'block, all good settlors. Unsatisliod demand for land in this fertile district. Strongly urge you to hasten subdivision of tho Baltour Estate." The following reply was received:—"l have referred your telegram in re' the Balfour Estate to tho chairman of the Land Purchase Board. The Government will endeavour to supply land for those who require it.—Massey."
The Balfour Estate, which comprises 3000 acres of good land adjoining the town, is owned by Mr A. J. Balfour, ex-Prime Minister of' Great Britain. It was offered to the Government some years ago for £11 10s per acre and has lately been reoffered at something like £18 per acre.
