MINERS' RUINOUS DEMANDS,

A CRITICAL SITUATION.

JOHANNESBURG, July 19. (Received July 20, at 5.5 p.m.) The majority are hopeful of a compromise in connection with the Federation Trades Unions' demands, hut the employers regard the miners' demands as wholly impracticable and ruinous. It is believed that if tho Government is able to satisfy the railway and miners they will hesitate to strike, provided their demands aro considered by the latelyannounced Commision of Inquiry. If, however, the railwaymen and the miners reject this method and demand the immediate satisfaction of their claims, and the Government must face a calamitous general strike and other troubles.
