SOLAR OBSERVATION.
MR CAWTHRON'S OFFER. (Per United Press Association.) NELSON, May 14. The final selecion of a site for the Ca\vthron Observatory will not be made until tho arrival from England ot the scientist whom Sir Robert Ball (director of the Cambridge University) lias been invited to nominate. When this gentleman has been appointed his first duty upon arrival hero will be to determine the meet suitable site for tho institution.-- Several sites have been offered, ft is contemplated that the English scientist will supervise the erection and equipment of the observatory, and afterwaras act as director. Mies Proctor, who has been staying at Nelson after the conclusion of her lecturing tour, has had several conferences with Mr Cawtliron, and lias inspected the available sites for the observatory. She is iully convinced that Nelson i 6 an'eminently suitable location for such an institution. Miss Proctor will leave Wellington en Friday for Sydney. It is her intention to deliver a series of lectures in Queensland at the request of the chancellor of the Brisbane University in order to advocate the establishment there of a chair of astronomy. She will later pay a visit to Egypt. Miss Proctor intends to return to Now Zealand to bo present at the opening of the Cawthron Observatory.
