The Supreme Court jury awarded Isaiah Fellowes £50 damages for slander against Joseph Millar, ex-proprietor of the Mercer Hotel, of which the plaintiff was barman. WHANGAREI, May 14. Dr Monk, the officer of the Health Department whp came from Auckiand in connection with the cases of the two Mangakahia Natives whose condition was considered to justify suspicion of smallpox, has* visited the patients, and has diagnosed their complaint as chicken-pox. The patients are now recovering. WELLINGTON, May 14. Patrick Donovan and Thomas John. Lewis, who escaped, from the Terrace Gaol last weak, were to-day sentenced to an additional six months, Both pleaded nob guilty to a charge of breaking and entering and stealing clothes. They were committed for trial. Mr F. F. Munro was to-day elected chairman of the Westport Harbonr Board, with Mr J. H. Greenwood as deputy chairman. Messrs Levin and Co. have eold the coastal steamer Gertie, 769 tons, to the Government for use as a coal hulk at Wellington, INVERCARGILL, May 14. At the Police Court to-day Lock Kin, for having in his possession opium in a form suitable for smoking, was fined £50, and for smoking £10.
