The steering gear of the ferry boat Birkenhead was thrown out of order today by the heavy seas in the harbonr, and the boat crashed into a jetty and then drifted into the fairway, where she sank. There were no passengers on board, and the crew of four were rescued. SCHOONER ON A SANDBANK. , _ SYDNEY, May 14. (Received May 15, at 0.35 a.m.) The gale still continues. The five-masted schooner George E. Billings, from Puget Sound, is ashoTe on a sandbank in Botany Bay, but her position is not serious.
