MINING.
The master of tho Golden Treasure dredge reports a return of 340z lOdwt for a period of a fortnight. Four days, however, wore taken up in clearing the paddock of silt. The master of the Olrig dredge reports that the dredge put in a fairly steady week, and the wash remains much the same as previously. On Friday the dredge was turned towards the tailings. The mineral possibilities of Greenland wore first brought prominently before the British investing public in 1853, when, in thottutumn oftfrait year, the Dolphin yacht, of 217 tons, after an unprecedented passage of six days Farewell, in Greenland, to Land's End, brought with her upwards of 16 tons of copper ore, said to average more than SO per cent, of pure metal, and a 'great variety of specimens of silver and load ores. The expedition was accompanied _ by : W, C. Vivian (a Cornish mining captain) and Herr Hoff (a mineralogist), on behalf of the Eiiiß of Denmark. Their report was stated to be very satisfactory regarding the metalliferous character of the entire country included in the grant. Tho average produce of blio ores sold at the Swansea ticketings from .the mines was 23jj, and Captain Vivian described a certain copper lode as being worth £100 a fathom. DREDGING RETURNS. Oz.dwt.gr. Adding bullion produced during the strike (£54,300) and £82,000 brought forward from year gives a total of £256,000. Dividends and income tax absorbed £180,000, depreciation £33,000, further transfer to the Horahora power scheme £25,000, leaving £18,000 to be carried forward A dividend of Is per share is declared, payable on Juno 2. REDUCED FEES. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copjrieht. LONDON, April 26. (Received April 27, at 5.5 p.m.) The directors of the Waihi Company have reduced their fees by £100 a year, and the chairman by £200. RICH GOLD-BEARING REEF. FLUTTER IN MOKIHTNUI. (Fflon Our Own Correspondent.) GREYMOUTH, April 27. Quito a flutter has been created in Mokihinui by the discovery of what appears to be a remarkably rich gold-bearing reef. Some stone, it appears, was found in a creek near the station, and was sent in for assay, and yielded 3oz Edwt. Other samples also gave somewhat similar assays. It is stated that there are indications of p. well-defined reef close to where the specimens were found. As a result of tho find there has been vigorous pejging-ovit of tho surrounding country. It is difficult at present to state what value can bo attached to tho discovery. THE WAIHI MINE. OPERATIONS AT DEPTH. (F.ioit Oon Own Correspondent ) WAIHI, April 26. The principal works in progress in the lowlevel of the Waihi Minn (depth 1150 ft) include the development of tho Martha, Empire, and Royal reefs, and tho sinking of the shafts with a view to opening up another level at a depth of 1300 feet. Tho total driving on the lodes mentioned amounts
to ralhci' over 2000 feet, and as far as the Martha and Empire lodea are concerned tliore is no material change to report beyond the fact that the latter ore body, which went off the drive going west, was again located by a crosscut into the wall recently, and is now a stronger body of stone. The values are still below paying point, except on f-hc Regina section of the Martha, lode, which is yielding milling dirt. On the Koyal West,, however, there has recently been an improvement, and a nico looking reef of good width, and apparently of payable value, is now showing. The existence here of better grndo ore is somewhat encouraging. The-No. 2 shaft will Boon be down to the required depth, and the management will then bo in a position to push out a crosscut to intersect the Edward reef, which should come to hand in about 200 feet of driving. The scheme for the introduction of electrical power from the Horahora Falls is nearing completion, and power should bo available inside three months.
TALISMAN CONSOLIDATED. IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENT AT No. 14 LEVEL. (Fnost Oob Owx ConiiKsrwfD&fT.) WAIHI. April 26. Since my last, visit to the Taliemun mine (Kaiungahake) the most important work at No. 14 kvel has been the advancement of the drive south on the Maria reef to get under the point where the first run of pay oro was met with in the Dubbo \ section, at No. 13 level. Rather over 200 feet north of this point the drift in tho low level passed through a short run of payablo quartz from 30 to 35 feet in length, after which for about 25 feet tho ore exposed, though carrying values, was below milling grade. Pay values then came in again, and for tho full distance since- driven the reef has carried pay dirt of vory fair value, while the averago width of the reef has been greater than the drive, and tho lodo has shown streaks of rich sulphide ore. Some 17 feet or 18 feet back from the face a large open vugg was encountered (the length of the cavity being about 16 feet), and it was decided to carry tho drive along on the, western' or hanging wall section of the reef. This work has exposed n width of 12 feet of pay ore close up to the face, with no walls showing. As th'e south face is still tho best part of 100 feet north of where tho pay oro first made in the Dubbo chute at the level above, and over 130 feet of milling quartz has already been opened up, the importance of the development is clearly established. Throughout the bottom workings the lodo is stronger and better defined than at the thirteenth level. The oxidised stone is giving place to sulphides, and the values are spreading and pointing strongly to the Ronunzu and Dubbo chutes verging into the continuous run of pay ore at greater depth. On tho southern end of the Bonanza chuto a rise is being put up to connect with No. 18' winze from No. 13 level. The reef in the rise is not very wide, but tho values for the distance risen are good. The connection will open up the southern ■ portion of the Bonanza block for stoping purposes. In the Talisman (northern) section of the mine, at the fourteenth level, the only development work at, nrosont in hand is tho No. 1 rise, which isjicing put up in tho crosscut oast, about 360 feet north of the No. 6 win/.e. with the object of locating the reef which was lost in the main drive north. The rise, which is up between 40 feet and 50 feet and may be expected to pick up the reef at any time, is vertically under No. 1 winze, which was sunk fo.r 14 feet on the lodo in value's. At No. 13 level tho drive south on the fcotwall branch of tho lode in the Dubbo section has been advanced a further distance of 60 feet, and is carrying along a woll-delincd and compact body of stone. The encasing country rock is of the right description, and although nothing payable has so far been encountered, there are ■possibilities so long as tho country continues, of such a favourable class. No. 14 winze on the first run of values in the Dubbo section is down over 30 feet from the level, and is hugging the foohvall country, Tho values are not un to the average. As soon ns the drive south in No. 14 level gets under tho winze a rise will bo put un to connect with tho winzo to give ventilation and open up .tho block for stoning. At No. 12 the No. 9 crosscut is being pushed out to intersect tho Welcome reef, the total distance driven being about 520 feet. Tho reef should come to hand anywhere in tho next 50 feet of, tho drive. The pump chamber in tho Talisman shaft at No. 14 level has been completed,_ and the work of cutting out the sump is now being proceeded with. As soon as this is done, and the timbers have been nut in. the nUmp will bo installed, and the sinking of tho Woodstock shaft will then bo resumed. .
